SanDisk introduces 16 GB microSD and M2 memory cards

If you were just running out of space on your memory card - here come some good news for you. SanDisk is going to start shipping 16GB microSD and M2 memory cards as early as next month.
The 16GB of capacity will give the M2 and microSDHC-compatible phones a chance to match the iPhone and the likes' memory capacity. While there is no official information yet which phone models will be compatible with the new standard we can bet any handset supporting the 8GB cards will manage to handle that too. And best of all, the availability of the new 16GB cards will most probably make the 8GB models more affordable.
The 16GB microSD cards are expected to hit the shelves at a price of 70 euro (100 US dollars), while the 16GB M2 cards will sell for about 90 euro (130 US dollars).

Samsung M8800 Pixon finally makes it in its full 8MP shine

The second 8 megapixel full touchscreen device on the market - Samsung M8800 Pixon finally saw its official announcement. After several reviews of the handset appeared yesterday, today Samsung finally held an event to publicly unveil it. We still don't have the full official specs list however, we have a pretty good idea what the Samsung Pixon is all about.
Samsung M8800 Pixon is the second 8 megapixel handset to be released by Samsung after the Samsung i8510 INNOV8. The Samsung INNOV8 is already available on some markets and the Samsung Pixon will follow soon with a release date set in early October.

To promote the M8800 Pixon, Samsung have started a website to showcase what a professional street photographer can do with a capable cameraphone. The web site will be fully operational as of October 2nd. Check it out at http://www.thephotographicadventuresofnickturpin.com/.
Sporting quad-band GSM support and tri-band 3G with HSDPA the Samsung Pixon is fully capable of global roaming. It stands at 107.9 x 54.6 x 13.8mm and weighs mere 109 grams. Featuring a 3.2-inch display with a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels the Samsung M8800 Pixon comes as a direct rival of LG KC910 Renoir.
Some of the other highlights of the Samsung M8800 Pixon include a GPS receiver, built-in accelerometer, FM radio with RDS and microSD memory card slot. In addition to taking exiting 8 megapixel photos its camera is capable of recording WVGA(740 x 480 pixels) videos at 30fps, which is the best that we know of among mobile phones. The Pixon will even have DivX playback and SRS (surround sound system) Virtual 5.1 Ch.
The thing that's obviously missing on the Samsung M8800 Pixon specs sheet is the Wi-Fi connectivity.
Expected to start shipping in mid-October, Samsung M8800 Pixon will retail at 550 euro (880 US dollars) a piece.

HTC Touch HD gets video previewed, available for pre-order at 619 euro

The uber-phone of them all, the HTC Touch HD has been caught in action by a French gadget website and it seems like the reviewer is really impressed even in this pre-release stage. The other HD news today is that the PocketPC is up for pre-order over at Amazon.de, which means we finally have a pricing.
As it seems a good pile of cash, or exactly 619 euro (890 US dollars), can make you one of the first owners of the high-resolution, high-spec'd, high-everything HTC Touch HD. Interestingly enough, that price tag goes good 20 euro below the pre-order price of Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1.
So, now that the price is clear, we are more than eager to see the real-life performance of the Touch HD. Unfortunately, currently our only clue on the matter seems to be a French website, which is apparently down at the moment.
Before it went down however, we managed to grab the reviewer's first impressions and a photo or two. To sum it up, the high-res display looks marvelous (especially the TouchFLO 3D), the UI response is snappy, camera makes nice pictures, the accelerometer is sensitive and can be fine tuned, and finally, the Touch HD is no bigger than the iPhone 3G.
Although the website is down, the guys there managed to upload a video preview (in French). You can check it out here, or hit this high-quality link over at YouTube

WinMo Asus Glaxy7 wants a piece of the action

The unofficial debut of an Asus device is heralded today by a bunch of live pictures leaked on the web. Rumor has it the Asus Glaxy7 features a massive 3.5" touchscreen, a 5 megapixel camera and a body made of stainless steel.
Should the rumored specs turn out right, the Asus Glaxy7 is going to give the HTC Touch Diamond and the Samsung i900 Omnia quite a run for their money. The Glaxy7 will have a trackball in charge of non-touch navigation, which seems the better option to us than Omnia's optical joystick. The new Asus is also said to have quad-band GSM support and tri-band (900/1900/2100) HSDPA.

Chances are good too that the Asus Glaxy7 screen will support WVGA resolution and the handset will have a built-in accelerometer. Measuring 115x59x13.8mm Asus Glaxy7 will carry 4GB of internal storage and a memory card slot. A-to-Z connectivity options include WLAN, USB and Bluetooth.
With the launch date rumored as soon as October we're all ears for an official confirmation by Asus.

Touch Diamond gets as white as snow

It seems that HTC are prepping a new white jacket for their Touch Diamond. Dressed in snow white, the new Diamond will be out by October winning some more market share for HTC.
As The Unwired reports, HTC have officially announced that the popular HTC Touch Diamond will get a snowy white uniform just in time for the holidays. It seems that the trend set by the iPhone 3G and the Samsung i900 Omnia has been deemed profitable even by HTC.

The snow white HTC Touch Diamond will start shipping in October at an expected price of 550 euro. There's no word on whether the US 3G Diamond will also get the white treatment

HTC Touch HD breaks loose - boasts WVGA screen, 5 MP camera and all

HTC Touch HD breaks loose - boasts WVGA screen, 5 MP camera and all

The HTC Touch HD (we don't know whether that would be its retail name) is powered by a 528Mhz CPU courtesy of the Qualcomm 7201A platform. There are 512MB flash memory and 288MB of RAM.
Of course, goodies like GPS, Wi-Fi and HSPDA go without saying, but the HTC Touch HD also has a 5 megapixel camera (without a flash though). Unfortunately, video recording is not that high-end as it maxes out at QVGA@30fps.
The Touch HD is due this Christmas, so we could be in for some official announcement really soon.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 coming in only three weeks time

Today Sony Ericsson announced the official launch date of their most eagerly expected handset – the XPERIA X1. One of the hottest names of the season will start shipping as early as 30th September in the UK, Germany and Sweden. Wider market availability in Europe, Asia and Latin America will follow until the end of Q4.
Earlier rumors that the X1 is delayed for the Q1 of 2009 were troubling the Windows Mobile fans. They can now have a sigh of relief and their only concern should be the tough choice between the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 and the HTC Touch Pro. The two most feature-packed WinMo devices are surely in for a tough fight.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1
Here is the full list of countries that we'll be receiving the second availability wave of XPERIA X1 (due by the end of the year).
APAC: Indonesia, Singapore, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam
Western Europe: Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Portugal
Central Europe: Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic
Middle East: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait
Africa: South Africa
Latin America: Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia
Here is what the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is about in case you have forgotten. The couple of highlights of the are most definitely the 3-inch WVGA touchscreen display and the QWERTY keyboard. Besides that, almost all connectivity options are present - from a 3.5mm audio jack to GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP, everything is on board. Navigation is sweet with the optical joystick, while the 9 available home screens should suit every scenario and all user preferences. The multimedia set includes FM radio without RDS and Media player.
The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 also has a 3.2 megapixel camera and will come with 400MB of internal storage. It is also expandable through the microSD card slot. The handset will have support for all the four GSM network bands and two version, each with three 3G network bands. HSDPA and HSUPA are there to ensure the quickest data transfers around.
Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 will be powered by a 528MHz ARM CPU and will have 256MB of RAM.
In conclusion we can only say we are waiting for the XPERIA X1 as eagerly as you are and we will without a doubt put it through its paces in a direct battle with the HTC Touch Pro.
Update: Sony Ericsson have started an interesting marketing campaign of the XPERIA X1 through a series of some Memento-inspired online video series. The series is called "Who is Johny X?" and its spin-off trailer can be found here at a dedicated website

iPhone 3G review: Twice the hype, half the novelty

It's finally here - the iPhone 3G. No, we mean that literally. It's finally at our office and boy, are we excited! GPS, HSDPA purring under the new iPhone hood with a hefty number of software enhancements.

But all them software goodies are available for the first-gen iPhone too - so is it worth the fuss? It may as well be, but we never know before we take it out for a spin.

Key features:

  • 3.5" 16M-color TFT display with a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels

  • Quad-band GSM support

  • Tri-band UMTS support with HSDPA

  • Built-in GPS receiver

  • Wi-Fi

  • 8 to 16GB of onboard storage

  • Accelerometer, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor

  • 2 megapixel camera

  • Silky smooth user interface with multi-touch user support

  • Unsurpassed web surfing experience

  • Push email with MS Exchange support

  • AppStore access for direct application download and installation

  • Redone rear

  • TV-out port

Main disadvantages:

  • No video calls over the 3G network

  • The handset wobbles on hard even surfaces

  • There are a number of messaging downers

  • Camera has no auto focus, nor video recording… nor any settings at all

  • Safari browser doesn't support Flash and Java, doesn't have a download manager

  • Bluetooth support limited to headset use only (no A2DP or file transfers)

  • No office document editor

  • No copy/paste functionality

  • You cannot sync Notes and TO-DOs

  • No memory card slot (but knowing Apple there will never be one)

Now, since we'll be heavily comparing the old and new iPhone, how about the following arrangement - the first one we'll call Number One and the newbie will be Number Two. Sorted. Wait a minute, no good? Crap, we knew it. OK then, the first one will be the iPhone 1G (as in "generation" of the device), while the new one will still be iPhone 3G (as in "generation" of the wireless network). That might sound inconsistent, but it's short and we like it this way, so before you go ballistic in the comments section, remember Number One and Number Two.

The iPhone 3G 16GB (White) in hand

So, back to the drill - the 3G-enabled iPhone was rumored ever since the iPhone 1G surfaced last year. Now that we have the real thing in our hands, it doesn't seem that groundbreaking anymore. Nevertheless, there are quite a few things to cover so we think reviewing it in detail is worth it. There's the updated design, the new white color (which we happen to have), the new iPhone 2.0 firmware/software/OS (call it what you will) with AppStore on board, the push email functionality and, finally, the GPS and HSDPA topping.

The Apple iPhone 3G

We will also be on the lookout for improvements in terms of audio quality, loudspeaker volume and camera image quality against the iPhone 1G.

Seems like quite a workload, so let's waste no more time and get to it. Join us after this short break for more on the iPhone 3G.

New Kodak 50 megapixel sensor launched

"The H3DII-50 has been designed to meet the challenging demands of high-end photographers who require the best in image quality’’.
New York: The Swedish company Hasselblad's announcement of the launch of Hasselblad H3DII-50, featuring a new Kodak 50-megapixel sensor, has pushed the available resolution in digital cameras to a new high.

Such high resolution goes beyond the needs of most consumers but professional photographers would appreciate the unprecedented level of detail provided by it.
"The H3DII-50 has been designed to meet the challenging demands of high-end photographers who require the best in image quality, performance and creative freedom," said Hasselblad CEO Christian Poulsen in a press release.
The camera, which would be available from October 2008, would also prove useful for applications such as aerial photography as the availability of higher resolution allows the plane to fly higher and the number of pictures necessary for covering a given area is also reduced.
The new Kodak image sensor, which produces an array of 8,176-by-6,132 pixels, would be implemented in the same size housing as Hasselblad's existing 39-megapixel H3DII-39 camera.
Kodak has also added a set of new features on the sensor, such as new dyes, that would result in richer colours. It also includes quick flush technology that enables faster image capture and lower power consumption, resulting in longer battery life.
